2019 started in much the same way as 2018 finished: busy! Not long into January and Rick began working  with The Dukes Theatre, Lancaster directing their Young Company on ‘Empire to Exit’: a look at the changing face of theatre from the reign of Queen Victoria to the modern day. The performance consisted of thirteen texts, a piece of physical theatre as well as new writing devised by the Young Company, staged in The Round, the Duke’s largest theatre space.

“Working with such a broad range of different texts has been a challenging but rewarding process not just for the members of the Young Company but for myself too. Each tonight text comes with a great deal for its actors to think about  during rehearsals; not just from the point of view of characterisation but also from a bigger perspective of how theatre at the time of writing  was performed. Aspects such as movement, posture, accents and even the tempo of their dialogue have all be explored over the past eleven weeks.” – Rick

Meanwhile, Heather has been working with Tamasha as Assistant Director to Pooja Ghai on ‘Approaching Empty’, which has toured the UK since the start of the year. Set in the North of England in the aftermath of Margaret Thatcher’s death, ‘Approaching Empty’ is the compelling drama by taxi-driver-turned-playwright Ishy Din that lays bare the everyday struggles of a post-industrial generation of British men.

In a scruffy minicab office, Mansha decides it’s time to create his own destiny and offers to buy the business from his lifelong friend Raf.

As the realities of the state of the company slowly unravel, these two best friends must confront the difficulties of going into business with those closest to them.

Rated highly by The Stage, The Daily Telegraph and WhatsOnStage ‘Approaching Empty’ has toured the length and breadth of the country from London, Glasgow, Derby to Oldham (to name but a few!).

Tamasha is a diverse cohort of bold and playful theatremakers, foregrounding emerging and established artists from culturally diverse backgrounds. Tamasha work hard to promote and inspire new writing by producing and touring the best new plays, that challenge and change audiences everywhere.
